Artisans du Bois

Old World Craftsmanship in a Contemporary World

A craftsman hand-planing a door

About Us

Five decades of the
menuisier's art

Nick Bruford began his apprenticeship under Swiss master craftsman André Liardet in 1974, over fifty years ago. Today, his work is still informed by timeless European design and a respect for structure and functionality. Artisans du Bois' fine mill work, joinery and Old-World custom doors make a stunning impression, built to last generations.

Located in Utah, Artisans maintains a clientele across the nation, including high-end builders, top designers and savvy homeowners. For these loyal customers Bruford will accommodate requests ranging from a single door to an entire estate. While Artisans du Bois is called upon to custom design much of its product, it also offers a selection of traditional door designs.

While Bruford favors French and Italian designs, he works effectively in most styles. Artisans now incorporates up-to-date materials, tools and CNC routers, which make measurements more accurate without tinkering with the authentic, Old-World craftsmanship for which the firm is known, producing shorter lead times, backed by excellent quality.

A lineage of
European mastery

Our craft descends from the Old World workshops of Europe, in the tradition of the French menuisier and ébéniste, carried from the master's bench to every door we build today.

About Our Doors

What differentiates ‘just a door’
from a door made by Artisans du Bois?

Like the doors made by master craftsmen in the days of Louis XIV, ours are made to last multiple lifetimes.

The anatomy of a mortise and tenon door: molding detail, raised panel, top rail, tenon, mortise, haunch, miter, stiles, lock rail, panel, bottom rail

Construction & Joinery

When creating exceptional doors, quality starts below the surface. All of our doors are constructed exclusively using mortise and tenon joinery, chosen for its superior strength and durability and used for millennia. Today's mass-production methods lead most doors, even those in luxury homes, to be built with structurally inferior cope & stick or doweled joints. The fundamental difference is simple: ours are made to last multiple lifetimes.

Paneling

The same boards are used in every panel from top to bottom, thereby maintaining a continuous grain pattern throughout the entire door, adding a discernible consistency that enhances aesthetic appeal.

Hand Planing

Subtle hand planing adds another dimension to the texture and a layer of authenticity reminiscent of doors seen throughout France and Europe. When it comes to hand planing, less is more. The nuance is so gentle you may not notice it until a ray of sunlight strikes its surface. In that moment you feel the gratification of owning a world-class door.

Finishing

Most of our doors have an oil or lacquer finish buffed with a French wax, the final step of a nine-part process that brings out the full depth of the wood's grain. Unlike the flat finish of a simple lacquer or urethane, ours will not crack or chip, and will grow more beautiful with proper care.
